HOW AROMATHERAPY CAN HELP WITH ANXIETY & STRESS

Updated: Apr 24, 2022

Plant oils have been used for their power to influence the emotions and state of mind for centuries. The use of relaxation techniques alongside essential oils can help us respond in a healthier way to stress. Enabling our bodies to relax and re-balance and not have to work so hard all the time.

Has there ever been a time when you've felt stressed, with not much left to give? But then

you've come across an aroma, which has put a spring in your step and a smile on your face, with a feeling of utter nostalgia. Well that's your olfactory receptors working, as it sends messages through to the part of the brain that controls emotions. Our brain learns to associate a smell with a feeling, which evokes our emotions and memories, causing a physiological response in our bodies. And not to forget these amazing essential oils also have insane therapeutic effects, benefiting our bodies systems.

Long term stress is super damaging to our bodies. Our bodies shouldn't be working harder than usual just to remain balanced.

It's estimated that stress is the cause of 75% of disease.

Remaining in a constant state of alert will eventually affect our bodies systems. If left untreated may cause health issues, such as: heart disease, strokes, cancer, high blood pressure, migraines, abdominal problems, insomnia and infections.

Today's stress factors are more about worrying over relationships, career paths and finances. The days of hunting for our food and protecting ourselves from predators are long gone. But still we need to burn that pent-up energy off somehow. As today's stresses are more prolonged, making it harder for our bodies to naturally return to a state of balance and calm.

This is one of the many ways aromatherapy can help, as it brings the body back into balance. It helps you feel deeply relaxed, and calms down any pent up tension you may be holding onto. It boosts the immune system, which has been weakened from being so stressed out. It also stimulates the circulatory system, removing any toxins and boosting your energy levels, enabling you to feel balanced and rejuvenated the natural way.

Ways To Use Aromatherapy To Help With Stress

Aromatherapy Massage

If you are feeling the effects of stress physically and emotionally, then aromatherapy massage can really help you.

Aromatherapy massage is a powerful treatment, using aromatic plant oils to heal the body and mind through massage and inhalation. Each plant oil has its own therapeutic effects, assisting and nourishing the body the natural way.

Massage with plant oils provides a stronger relief from mental and physical fatigue, rather than massage alone.

Aromatherapy can reduce the feeling of stress, increase contentment and decrease levels of cortisol, which is the stress hormone.

I offer my clients a free health consultation before their first treatment. This enables me to safely choose an essential oil blend which will benefit their individual needs.

There's a huge range of essential oils to choose from and when safely blended can create a gorgeous synergy, where the oils therapeutic effects are magnified, working in harmony together.

After the treatment I give my clients some after care advice and a sample of their bespoke essential oil blend to further enjoy the therapeutic effects at home.

It's important to make sure the aromatherapist is fully qualified. They would have had training about correct dilutions of the essential oils. They will also have a good understanding about the safety data of each oil. Some oils are contraindicated to certain health issues, so its important to make sure you are using a professional aromatherapist. Do get in touch if you have any queries.

Diffuses & Oil Burners

Aromatherapy diffusers and burners take essential oils and evaporate them through the air. They can be used for enhancing your mood, evoking relaxing and uplifting emotions.

They can also be used to keep insects away. For example lemongrass is a great insect repellent!

My favourite diffuser blend:

(Mixed with water)

Relaxing blend:

Lavender x1 drop

Ylang Ylang x1 drop

De-stress blend:

Frankincense x1 drop

Vetivert x1 drop

Focus blend:

Pressure Point Rollers

These are great to help boost your mood whilst on the go, the perfect de-stress ritual. Just roll onto pulse points at the temples, neck & behind ears and wrists.

They help calm your mind when life is hectic and your head is overcrowded. The comforting blends help reduce feelings of anxiety and bring a sense of calm.

They're a handy size to pop in your pocket, handbag or keep at work to help you find your calm during those trying moments.
